Aquatecture
Every year, the international design community gathers in Milan for the furniture fair and Design Week. GROHE presents its premium sub-brand GROHE SPA in an immersive installation at the Palazzo Reale in the city center. The concept was developed in collaboration with the Design and Brand Identity team of LIXIL Global Design. The idea of "Aquatecture" merges water and architecture, transforming the Cortile d’Onore, the former courtyard garden of the Palazzo, into an oasis-like inner courtyard.
Four pavilions reflect the layout of the former medieval garden with its four-part cross intersection. They are a modern interpretation of a garden with architectural elements. The open, orthogonal architecture is inspired by classical modernism and the masters of seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces, such as Mies van der Rohe, Richard Neutra, Philip Johnson, and Frank Lloyd Wright.
The symmetrical positioning of the pavilions, although not symmetrical themselves, creates a unique scenographic unity with diverse perspectives and constantly changing sightlines.
On a tour, carefully curated "Aquatecture" rooms present the four levels of GROHE SPA: multisensory moments, sophisticated colors and surfaces, bespoke collections, and innovative 3D metal-printed products. Each setting conveys the features and individual design solutions of the product lines in atmospheric spaces, with water always as the central element.
In a perfect symbiosis of architecture and product, nearly ritualistic spaces have been created. Through the interplay with water, sound, wind, and shadow, a zen-like atmosphere has developed – a place for deceleration and recharging. In line with the spa concept of "Salus per aquam – health through water", which is the founding concept behind the GROHE SPA collection.
During the well-attended and lively Milan Design Week, the GROHE SPA installation at the Palazzo Reale became a contemplative and sensuous place with the highest quality of stay, connecting architecture, nature, and people. The concept was in perfect harmony with this year’s Furiosalone theme – "Materia Natura".
